During orientation, a member of the nursing staff will explain how to use the bedside call bell. If you need help, press it. Your room number will automatically register at the Patient Care Station, and a staff member will answer. If your signal does not receive an immediate response, staff may be busy with others, so please be patient. If you are deaf or hard of hearing, a staff member will come to your room when you press the call bell.
For assistance in the bathroom or shower, pull the wall chain. If you feel you would be unable to do this, notify the staff.
Electrical appliances, including hairdryers, curling irons, razors, radios, heating pads, portable heaters or fans, computers, and other devices, are not permitted in patient rooms. You may use only battery-operated devices.
There are outlets against the back wall where you can charge your phones and devices. Please do not use the red outlets.
Fire drills are held routinely, so don’t be alarmed if you hear bells. The staff will notify you about what to do if an alarm applies to your unit. During the drill, your room door will be closed. This is just a routine procedure.
TTYs and hearing aid-compatible handsets are available. Dial the rental desk at ext. 9124.
Mail is delivered to your room Monday through Friday. Flowers and balloons are brought to you as soon as they arrive (with the exception of the critical care units, where they are not permitted). Avoid delays by having deliverable items addressed with your full name, room/bed number, and your North or Prince's Bay site University Hospital designation.
Any mail received after your discharge will be forwarded to your home address.
Subject to change due to patient safety and local, state, and federal guidelines.
Please leave all medications at home. The medications you take as a patient must be prescribed by your physician in the hospital and dispensed by the hospital pharmacy. Medication that you take at home might interfere with the medication you’re given as a patient. Bring a list of the medications you take at home and give it to the nurse or physician at the time of your admission. While at home, keep a list of the medications you are taking, including the name of the medication, dose, and how often you take it. When you leave the hospital, update this list with any changes. Keep this list with you at all times.

If you have valuables, such as jewelry and cash, please give them to a relative or friend to take care of during your stay. If you cannot send valuables home, they should be deposited in our safe and may only be redeemed on your day of discharge, weekdays between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. At other times, a member of your care team will help you retrieve them.
Contact lenses, eyeglasses, hearing aids, and dentures should be stored in your bedside stand when not in use. Please don’t put them on your bed or food tray, wrap them in a napkin, or put them under your pillow—they may be damaged or lost. Staten Island University Hospital cannot be responsible for replacement of personal belongings.
Please do not use the bathrooms in patient rooms. They are reserved only for patients in order to protect their health. Public restrooms are located throughout the hospital.
